#527 – How can you avoid happiness?

Happiness is inevitable, but you can stop it, if you know how.

When happiness comes knocking, following these three simple steps will revert you to your preferred state of misery.

STEP ONE

In your head, you may have noticed, there are creatures that think living is dangerous business. They’ll tell you over and over that things like wrinkles under your eyes or putting a stain on your blouse right before the board meeting are shameful because they cause rejection, and rejection causes death.

So, when you don’t pay attention to these voices, you hear your real Self. Without the creatures’ guidance and judgment, you won’t be afraid to have the “wrong” feeling or thought. You’ll feel your inner life without trying to block it, and that’s why you stay happy.

Now, to block happiness, keep listening to the chatter in your head. If you hear, “you’re not good enough,” believe it. If you hear, “why bother writing your book?” give up. And so on.

STEP TWO

When reality happens in front of you, you have two options: you could either let it be, knowing that you can’t control life into submission; or you could insist on having it your way.

Choosing the second will effectively stave off happiness. You just need to blame your “bad luck” for the drop of mustard on your blouse, feel victimized by circumstances and the weather, and get blue in the face wanting things to go the way you want.

STEP THREE

Do whatever you can to stay away from your real Self.

If painting or knitting or writing makes you feel alive, find all sorts of excuses to not do it. Instead, scroll your social media feed anytime there’s nothing else to focus your attention on, get a job that uses only 23% of your mental capacity, or go back to steps number one and two.

These three steps will unlock your infinite and deep unhappiness.

If that’s not what you want, what steps will you avoid to allow happiness?

Love,
