#512 – What promises to yourself are worth keeping?

As the clock hits 00:01 on January 1st, all those New Year’s resolutions you might have felt strongly about in November will start to feel distant, like a dream you had long ago.

The Ghosts of Not Following Up and Idea Deflection will look at you, puzzled––”promises? What promises?”

Your Ego, sensing disruption, will call you (and the ghosts) to order: “Either you fit into those pants you got 12 years ago, or you’re nothing.” Or “Either you get your essay published at [add in your favorite, least accessible publication], or you can’t call yourself a writer.”

For the whole year, your mind will be the battlefield where your Ego (gotta, gotta, gotta) and the Ghosts that want you to stay put pull you in opposite directions.

That’s missing the point. You make New Year’s Resolutions because you want to evolve. But evolution isn’t about fulfilling external goals; it’s about becoming more of yourself, and the only part of you that can help with that is your True Self.

Your True Self doesn’t care about body size, but about body healthfulness. You work out because doing it keeps your body (including your brain and heart) healthy.

Your True Self ignores prestige because its only goal is Realization. You write because each word you type helps You grow into Your Self––no matter where your writing appears or who reads it.

When you commit to being all of who you already are, you’re one step closer to true realization.

What promises will you make and keep to yourself in the new year?

Love,

Carolina
